This glossary will contain words that I will be using in the future as someone who will work in the field of psychology and also words I've learned in some of my classes.
Ableism
noun
Discrimination in favor of able-bodied people.
Example: Paul showed ableism when he mocked Martha for being in a wheelchair.

Bipolar disorder
noun
A mental illness that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, activity levels, and concentration.
Example: Kanye West has lived through episodes of mania and depression. I think he has a bipolar disorder.

Child development
noun
Child development involves the biological, psychological and emotional changes that occur in human beings between birth and the conclusion of adolescence.
Example: A teacher must learn about child development in order to teach in accordance with how the child is developing.

Classical conditioning
noun
A learning process that occurs when two stimuli are repeatedly paired: a response which is at first elicited by the second stimulus is eventually elicited by the first stimulus alone
Example: I am currently using classical conditioning to teach my puppy where to urinate.

Coping
noun
Expending conscious effort to solve personal and interpersonal and interpersonal problems, and seeking to master, minimize or tolerate stress or conflict.
Example: Today Paul yelled at me but I used my coping skills to remain calm.

Cultural relativism
noun
Cultural relativism refers to not judging a culture to our own standards of what is right or wrong, strange or normal.
Example: Paul practiced cultural relativism when he recognized that races outside of the Caucasian race can be attractive.

Cybernetics
noun
the science of communications and automatic control systems in both machines and living things.
Example: My friend Martha is into cybernetics

Ethnocentrism
noun
Ethnocentrism is a belief or attitude that one's own culture, ethnicity, or nationality is superior to others. It means to judge other cultures, practices, behaviors, beliefs, and people based on one's own standards and values. Ethnocentrism often involves feelings of dislike or contempt for other groups.
Example: Paul showed ethnocentrism when he said he thought Caucasians are more attractive than any other race.

Free Association
noun
The mental process by which one word or image may spontaneously suggest another without any apparent connection.
Example: I like to do free association in my free time.

Hypermnesia
noun
Exceptionally exact or vivid memory, espacially as associated with certain mental illnesses.
Example: Some people on the autism spectrum have hypermnesia.

Internalizing
verb
Make attitudes or behaviour part of one's nature by learning or unconscious assimilation.

Lucid dreaming
verb
The view that conscious awareness of dreaming is a learnable skill that can enable dreamers to control the direction and content of their dreams.
Example: I keep a journal on my nightstand every night to write my dreams down, that way, I can practice lucid dreaming.

Mental distress
noun
a range of symptoms and experiences of a person's internal life that are commonly held to be troubling, confusing or out of the ordinary.
Example: My friend is currently having a burn-out, she's showing signs of mental distress.

Narcissism
noun
Selfishness, involving a sense of entitlement, a lack of empathy, and a need for admiration, as characterizing a personality type.
Example: Nicolas is incredibly self-absorbed, he lacks empathy, and he has low self-esteem. I think he is suffering from narcissism.

Neurosis
noun
A class of functional mental disorders involving distress but neither delusions nor hallucinations, whereby behaviour is not outside socially acceptable norms.
Example: Julie is experiencing a deep neurosis.

Pastoralism
noun
Pastoralism is a form of animal husbandry where domesticated animals (known as "livestock") are released onto large vegetated outdoor lands (pastures) for grazing, historically by nomadic people who moved around with their herds.
Example: Kenya, Somalia and Nepal are all countries that practice pastoralism.

Placebo effect
noun
A beneficial effect produced by a placebo drug or treatment, which cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient's belief in that treatment.
Example: They gave my grand-mother chalk pills. They are hoping the placebo effect will help cure her depression.

Primatology
noun
The branch of zoology that deals with primates
Example: My friend Martha studies primatology.

Psychogenic aphonia
noun
Loss of the voice due to emotional or psychological stress.
Example: Martha was molested as a child, as a result, she suffered from psychogenic aphonia for the entirety of her ninth grade.

Radical Behaviourism
noun
Radical behaviorism is a psychological concept that delves into how our environmental factors influence our state of mind.
Example: Some autistic people have to go to radical behaviourism therapy.
